A cozy guide to writing (and resting) in the heat of summer

Hey writer friends,

We’ve made it to July... one of the brightest, busiest, most nostalgia-drenched months of the year. Between beach trips, backyard barbecues, fireworks, and full calendars, it can be hard to carve out time for your writing life. But here’s your gentle reminder: your stories still matter, especially now.

This month, let’s talk about rhythm and rest. About making space to write without pressure. About writing in the small moments, in the shade, between sips of iced tea. And about tapping into themes of freedom, celebration, found family, and summer identity, all the big-hearted things July is made of.

Here are some soulful prompts and writing reflections to keep your pen moving (and your mind relaxed) this month:

🕰️ 1. The Rhythm of Rest

Summer is a season of expansion and ease. That doesn’t mean stop writing—it means loosen the grip. Let your process flow like warm breeze and quiet waves.

* Can you create a “bare minimum” writing rhythm for the month? Maybe that’s journaling once a week, or 100 words a day.

* Take a walk without headphones and let your mind drift into story.

* Carry a tiny notebook to capture lines and scenes as they appear.

Prompt: A character who's always been in control is forced to slow down. What do they discover when they finally stop?

🎆 2. Write the Fireworks

July is full of color, noise, energy—so let’s write it. Think: first kisses under the stars, childhood memories by the lake, family gatherings with secrets underneath the surface.

Prompt: It’s the Fourth of July in a small town. A long-held tradition is about to be broken. Who breaks it—and why?

🛶 3. Found Family, Summer Edition

There’s something about summer that brings strangers together and bonds them fast—campfire chats, shared hotel rooms, rescue missions in roadside diners.

Prompt: A group of unlikely people are stranded together for the summer (a road trip gone wrong, summer camp, canceled flights…). What do they learn about each other—and themselves?

🇺🇸 4. Americana With a Twist

Summer in the U.S. is steeped in tradition, but every tradition has layers. Go beyond the red, white, and blue. What’s really going on behind the bunting?

Prompt: Write a story where a character uncovers a hidden history behind a beloved July tradition in their town.

🌊 5. The Freedom to Begin Again

This season is about sunlit second chances. Let your characters have them. Or better yet—give one to yourself.

Prompt: A character gets the opportunity to return to a place they haven’t visited since childhood. Something unfinished is waiting for them there.

💫 July Mini-Challenge:

"Freedom Scenes" Each week, write a short piece (100–300 words) based on one of these types of freedom:

* Freedom from expectation

* Freedom to speak

* Freedom to leave

* Freedom to choose

* Freedom to love

A Final Word From the Porch Swing...

Writing during summer doesn’t have to look like writing in the fall, winter, or spring. Let it be a little softer. A little slower. Write at golden hour. Write barefoot. Write while fireworks go off in the background. Your stories are still alive inside you, even if they’re moving at the speed of cicadas and sunscreen.

Wishing you a July filled with moments that matter—and words that linger.
