November Writing Prompts: NaNoWriMo Edition

Welcome to National Novel Writing Month!

Your November Writing Adventure Starts Here:

Hello, amazing writers! If you’re reading this, you’re either gearing up to write your heart out this November, or maybe you’re just curious about what NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is all about. As your friendly hybrid publisher, I'm here to break down the basics and get you pumped for one of the most exciting months in the writing community!

What is NaNoWriMo?

In a nutshell, NaNoWriMo challenges you to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It’s intense, it’s exhilarating, and for many, it’s a life-changing experience! This is about silencing that inner critic, saying goodbye to editing for a month, and just writing—no limits, no perfectionism. The goal is to build a daily habit, connect with a community of like-minded writers, and turn those story ideas into a first draft.

Who Can Join?

Everyone! NaNoWriMo is a welcoming space for writers of all levels and genres. Whether you’re an experienced author or a first-time novelist, the NaNo community is full of resources, online groups, pep talks, and local meet-ups to keep you inspired and on track.

10 Writing Prompts to Spark Your NaNoWriMo Inspiration

Feeling a little blocked? Or maybe just looking for a fresh idea? These prompts cover a variety of genres, so dive in and see if one (or more) sparks something for you!

  1. Fantasy: In a world where everyone receives a unique magical talent on their 18th birthday, you are the only one who didn’t. Now, you must embark on a journey to uncover the reason—and the truth about your destiny.

  2. Mystery: A small-town detective receives a series of anonymous letters, each one detailing an unsolved cold case. But as they dig deeper, the detective realizes these letters aren’t just clues—they’re confessions.

  3. Romance: A reclusive artist moves to a small seaside village and meets an intriguing stranger who seems to know everything about them. But the more they learn about this stranger, the more mysterious their past becomes.

  4. Sci-Fi: In a futuristic society where memories can be bought and sold, you start to notice pieces of your own memory going missing. Who—or what—is stealing them, and why?

  5. Horror: After moving into an old family estate, you discover letters and diary entries hinting that your ancestors were involved in a dark pact that must be completed by you—or else.

  6. Historical Fiction: A young woman disguises herself as a soldier to follow her brother to the front lines during World War I. Along the way, she discovers the horrors of war, the bonds of comradeship, and a secret enemy spy ring.

  7. Young Adult: A group of teens discovers that they’re the only ones who can communicate with a mysterious creature living in the forest outside their town. As they become friends with it, they start noticing strange changes in themselves.

  8. Thriller: A journalist uncovers a series of recent deaths in the city that all mirror famous cold cases from 20 years ago. The twist? Each victim has a personal connection to the journalist.

  9. Magical Realism: Every time you fall asleep, you dream of a mysterious city. One day, you see a photo of the city online and learn it actually exists. You set out to find it, but nothing could prepare you for what you uncover.

  10. Western: A former outlaw, trying to live a quiet life in a remote town, is pulled back into the violent life he left behind when he learns an old enemy is now the town’s sheriff—and has been waiting for him.
